So, you want to live in the woods
??
Assuming you're looking for a suitable stand,
then the following aspects need to be met, or at least be considered :
-
Essential
-
Water Supply - suitable spring (or soggy ground where
one can be found !)
-
Shelter - somewhere suitable to build one
-
Sanitation
-
Access - what sort of vehicles (if any) will need
to be used ?
-
Important
-
Building Materials - Wood is the obvious one, but
what about the geology ? Shale/rab is good for access tracks, as
is sandstone. The latter is good for walling, boundary or shelter
building. Lots of hard rock is of little use, low lying marshy ground
(on
many feet of glacial tilth) is little better !
-
Fuel - hardwoods tend to burn better (i.e. longer)
than softwoods.
-
Stream, river, for power generation.
-
Need Consideration
-
Shooting/sporting rights - owned and included in
the woods ?
-
Public rights of way - are you bothered by others
being encouraged to access your woods ?
-
Pond - source of food in addition to mental relaxation....
-
Nice to Haves
-
No fencing liabilities
-
Mineral rights (This excludes coal &
gold !)
